For my booklet I am using scanned in images of wire, clay and possibly a third medium.

Suggestions anyone?

As for the text…it is a bit of my own poetry focusing on the topic of

opposites, dual feelings, fragmentation & memory…

Did anyone have the pleasure of having Celia King’s pop-up book around the house as a kid? I am taking her Book Media class this semester and would highly recommend anyone who is is 2D or 3d to take that class. Celia is a very professional… and she is genuinely interested in helping you achieve your biggest dreams for book design. I didn’t even realize that the Seven Mysterious Wonders of the World book she published was by her until a lecture she gave last night where she presented some of her work. It was the only pop-up book we bought new growing up… a special gift that my mother bought spontaneously (I think for herself originally) but that we were allowed to look at any time we wanted…as long as we put it back on the bookshelf after we were done.

I remember feeling so amazed to be able to flip through the pages, the book was smaller than most books we had and although we had to be careful looking through it, the craftsmanship was solid enough that we didn’t have to worry about tearing the pages or ruining a delicate pop-up feature that is the case with so many other books of this kind. I was very impressed and still am, at the success of her publishing and her unconventional yet commerical approach to books.

a more in depth article: The Coltan Wars Pt. 1

an excerpt:

The greatest motive for violence in the DRC is not the thirst for political power so much as the thirst for the immense potential profit from the DRC’s ample mineral wealth. While “blood diamonds” have garnered attention in the popular media, a lesser-known but important natural resource has precipitated this ongoing crisis: Coltan.

From democracynow.org, the daily American, independent, award-winning news program.

JUAN GONZALEZ: ….The Pentagon reported last month that the rate of suicides among US troops has reached an all-time high, since record-keeping began three decades ago. At least 128, and possibly as many as 143, soldiers reportedly took their own lives last year. This January, the number of military suicides spiked to twenty-four, surpassing the total number of troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined in the same period….

AMY GOODMAN: ….the news website Salon.com just completed an in-depth investigation into a rash of suicides and murders since 2004 at one army base, the Fort Carson base in Colorado. They found most of the deaths were preventable and could have been avoided, but for the neglect and inadequate care returning combat veterans got from the Army.

Obama has ordered an additional 17,000 US combat troops to Afghanistan with new deployments beginning in May which will increase the US occupation force to 55,000.

Will Canada silently follow suit?
